Ectotherm
- An organism that regulates its body temperature largely by exchanging heat with its surrounding environment. An ectotherm may also be known as a poikilotherm. It relies on external sources, such as sunlight or a heated surface to regulate body temperature. These organisms do not require as much food and energy as animals that produce heat internally, but are less likely to survive and be active in lower external temperatures.
