Abscisic Acid
Chemical formula: C15 H20 O4
- A lipid plant hormone that inhibits cell growth, it is associated with fruit drop, leaf death and seed dormancy. It is synthesized in the plastids from carotenoids. This hormone helps plants maintain water balance, and its effects can be reversed with gibberellins. It is partly responsible for leaf abscission in aging or diseased plants and also for promoting dormancy in buds and seeds. Abscisic acid is also involved in the induction of dormant buds and seeds.
